RM of Enniskillen’s story
The Rural Municipality of Enniskillen No. 3 incorporated on December 13, 1909. Sam McKnight, who had come to the area from Durham County, Ontario, chaired the committee that organized it.
McKnight seems to have had his heart set on a northern Irish name. His committee proposed Enniskillen, Derry, Antrim, Boyne, Alma, Fermanagh and Waterloo, and the government chose the first on the list. The name honours Enniskillen, the county town of Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, whose name comes from the Irish inis Ceithleann, meaning "Ceithle's island."
Today the RM sits in the southeast corner of the province, along the United States border, and surrounds the town of Oxbow and the village of Glen Ewen. Boscurvis, Elcott, Northgate and Openshaw are localities within it. On June 9, 2026, an EF3 tornado struck south of Alameda, the strongest in Saskatchewan since 2010 and the strongest in Canada since 2023.
